Well I put money away. Have since I was 25. Yikes!!! That was 22 Years ago!!! Ouch!!!
People do not understand the concept of Social Security and how it works and why it is doomed. Think of it as a Giant Multi Level Marketing Operation.
When it started, so few people were on it, that no one(current workers) noticed the tax. 10 years ago, there were 20 workers paying into it for every 1 person receiving it.
Fast forward, 2007-2008, is the first year Babay Boomers(Who basically funded it) begin retiring at 62(Early Benefits) and that will continue for the next 20+ years. At that time there will be roughly between 4 to 6 workers paying into it for everyone receiving it. (Lower Birth Rates, Huge amount of Baby Boomers receiving it).
Who is gonna pay for it? Well either kids in their 20's now and younger will face HUGE if not Devistating taxes.
The real crime is that there can be no Political discussion on it, because any reform talk, automatically get "Spun" to say "They are cutting benefits for the Elderly" and niether party has even suggested that! Clinton himself, wanted SS reform, yet his advisors talked him out of it, for fear of Scaring seniors and losing their vote.
Bush faced a similar dilema.
So where we stand now is the one's who benefitted the most from SS are the one's who paid in the least(Current recipients) and those who paid in the most (baby Boomers, and the next generation) will get the least.
Isn't that what Multi Level Marketing is?
Huge issue........

It isn't a matter of the government "bailing out" anyone. It's more a matter of the government having used social security cnntributions as a bank, to 'borrow' from at whim. Which is exactly what they have been doing for decades. I've a long way to go before retirement. Still it worked before the government started using it as a 'cash cow'. I do not care how little it is, people worked for years to qualify for it and they deserve it. The government is simply trying to get out from under having defrauded workers of their well-earned savings.
I have a 401 K, quite hefty even at my age. But the government is still taking money out of MY earned income for MY social security. And it better be there when I am ready to collect. I don't care HOW long it will be before I collect.
I have absolutely no intention of 'investing
any money into Bush's "chosen" --- I can't trust ANY of those jas's !! Not one !!
Social Security is NOT broke. Use common sense. Many who contributed will never collect. Many die before they have a chance to collect. Many die WHILE they are collecting. What happens? THEIR MONEY goes to someone else who is collecting. Many millions contribute every week, bi-weekly, bi-monthly, every month, twice a month, etc.
EVERYONE who contributes will not collect.
The government can fool YOU.
but not me.

WHERE do you get this "bail out" crap?????

Most working Americans have made some attempt to put away money in 401k's or IRAs, but they still depend upon SS.

What...you think everyone is independently wealthy?

Or that all REAL blue collar working men and women opted to eat Kraft Dinner all their lives so that they wouldn't have to eat cat food after they retired?

Now...if you want to have a mature, intelligent discussion, why don't you post your own earning level and savings plan for retirement, and then well talk....

We'll, I sure hope there gonna give the money I've been investing in since I was Twelve. I thought that was my retirement. Employers don't pay much and everything and everyone wants your money. My parents would have to have started saving for me before I was born to retire comfortably. I was hoping to add a little extra to my expected income, but where do I start and who's to say some great thing won't happen just cause I have the money and it be useless anyway. Yeah, unless I get a wonderful job with great retirement plans, then yes, I probably will be living off my initial investment. Thanks for thinking this program that helps people that work hard but aren't rich to enjoy what little bit of life they haven't worked away in some kind of comfort a bail out!

I have 3 different Retirement plans i pay into
and i am forced to pay social security... so that makes 4
i am not at all relining on social security ....
i do not want the government in my retirement business
SS
is a bunch of crap
we live in a society where it is OK to kill a baby
but its not OK to let a old person die because they didn't want to save money for the future....

as long as were are killing babies i say euthanize the old when it comes time they can't work... because they didn't want a retirement plan !

babies aren't even givin a chance to make a mistake... so why do we protect the ones who blew money and made mistakes their whole life?

its not that expensive to live...
its just people want all this extra fun fancy stuff...
so since they CHOOSE to buy into it why should i pay their retirement?

I'm saving, becuase social security isn't much, even if it is there...

but, do remember, old people vote more than any other group... and when push comes to shove, odds are, they will get something out of it, or they will vote for someone who will change it so that they will get something...

Not I.

I fully expect Social Security to go the way of welfare. It'll be need-based rather than universal. So many people tolerate the system because it operates under the guise of a pension plan. There's the illusion that we pay into a system, sort of like a 401K or a savings account, and when we reach a certain age, we're just withdrawing our savings. Of course, that's not how it works. Each generation is responsible for propping up the generation before it. Although you do pay in, the government pays in, too.

You know how the SSA puts penalties on individuals the earlier they start collecting? I suspect the age at which you receive a penalty will go up even higher, punishing people who'd actually like to retire at 65. And if you're not poor or if you have your own pension plan through a company, you probably won't be able to collect.

I'm socking away my own money.
